A Safe and Accountable Peoples NHS in Scotland (ASAP-NHS). Invite to Parliamentary Briefing

(Hosted by Neil Findlay MSP for the Lothians)

ASAP-NHS consists of a broad range of people including doctors, nurses, patients, patients’ families, academics, members of the legal system, and health and safety inspectors. Some members have been active in the public domain such as whistleblowers Rab Wilson and Dr Jane Hamilton but others need to remain anonymous.

A number of brief presentations will be made followed by the screening of a short film. The event is designed to draw the activities of the group ASAP-NHS to the attention of Members of the Scottish Parliament, the media and the wider public. ASAP-NHS has identified common themes and experiences of staff, patients and families when care has failed. Collating and investigating this evidence can inform improvements in health care provision and future service provision and development.

The aim of the group is to campaign for:

  • Safe, effective, efficient and high quality health care for patients in Scotland
  • Accountable health service management that adheres to national standards of care. Transparency and openness with staff, patients and relatives when thing go wrong. Clear monitoring, inspection and regulation by an appropriate independent body (which unlike England and Wales does not exist in Scotland) ensuring consistent adherence to existing governance policies and health and safety legislation.
  • People centered flexible, transparent and responsive NHS management of concerns raised by patients their families and staff. A management culture that encourages and learns from consistent critical incident reporting with a robust and non persecutory management response to critical incidents focused on service improvement.
